World Firefly Day T-shirt (Green)

RM 30.00

The year 2018 was the first celebration of World Firefly Day (WffD) dedicated to the most charismatic light-emitting insects around the world. The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) celebrated together with the Kuala Selangor District Council (MDKS) at the Kuala Selangor Firefly Sanctuary, a world-famous firefly watching site since the 1970s. Firefly watchers will get to ride on traditional rowboats or sampans to watch the synchronous fireflies quietly along the Selangor river.

The World Firefly Day was proposed by MNS in 2017 during the International Firefly Symposium (IFS) in Taipei, as an annual public awareness event to be celebrated worldwide. In the same year, the Fireflyers International Network (FIN) was established, where the members of the network, comprised of academics, professionals, artists, naturalists and firefly enthusiasts. Their mission is to conduct research, educate, advocate and protect the fireflies.

The WffD theme was 'We're tiny and bright, please don't forget us!' The theme reflects the first task for FIN is to give the tiny fireflies a voice as many people have never seen a firefly before. Many people will remember the fireflies as their childhood insect, and later in life rediscovered them again and realised that they were not as much as before. The fireflies are being threatened by human activities that affect their habitat, food and light communications, mass collection from the wild for entertainment, not responsible tourism of firefly watching and  climate change, amongst other threats. Fireflies are beneficial to the ecosystem services and to a certain extent, human livelihood in terms of habitat conservation and firefly watching tourism.

Looking at the urgency of the threats to the fireflies, in 2018, the IUCN SSC Firefly Specialist Group was formed to conserve the threatened firefly species around the world. In early 2021, for the first time the first batch of North American fireflies was published in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The tiny and bright fireflies are no longer forgotten.
