The Belum Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC) is approximately 320,000ha. It is one of the largest forest areas remaining in Peninsular Malaysia. The forest complex consist Royal Belum State Park, Temengor, Banding,& Gerik Forest Reserves, Stateland Forests, Temengor Lake and the newly gazetted (2013) Aman Jaya Forest Reserve. BTFC covers a wide range of landscapes from mountains to lowland rainforest rich in biodiversity which is important for conservation as well as contributing to the livelihood of the local communities.

Belum Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC) has been proposed to be protected, as such to be listed as a National Park since 1968. MNS carried out “MNS – Belum Expedisi Sains” in 1993/94, which was financially supported by the German Government and had the privilege of a royal patronage, by DYMM Almarhum Sultan Azlan Shah, Sultan of Perak and then Yang di Pertuan Agong. The expedition was flagged off from the Istana Negara.  MNS led various campaigns and advocacy for the protection of Belum Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC). In 2003, Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak proclaimed the Reserve as Royal Belum in 2003 and, subsequently on 10 May 2007, the Perak Government officially gazetted 117,500 hectares of the forest as the Royal Belum Stated Park. MNS received the inaugural Merdeka Award in 2008 for its tireless work to ensure the protection of the 130 million years old rainforest.

“Belum Revisited: A Malaysian Heritage of 130 million years old” was published in 2015, to mark MNS 75th Anniversary celebration and to update the recent development in Belum Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC). It uses the text of the original “Belum: A Rainforest in Malaysia” by G. W. Davisson (1995) but with new updated photographs, design and layout.
