Snake bites in this country constitute an occupational hazard and are common among farmers, fishermen, estate workers and woodcutters. People who frequently visit forested area and sea beaches may also accidentally come in contact with snakes. Fortunately, the mortality rate cause by snake bites in Malaysia is not significant. However, a bitten person can be temporarily incapacitated for months, thus affecting his earning capacities, with subsequent financial hardship to himself and family. Therefore, a knowledge of how to distinguish poisonous from non-poisonous snakes is essential for reducing the present snake-bite incidence as well as the mortality rate.
